In January (Get Organized month) there is a sudden urgency to start the year organized! But what if you could jumpstart the process now? You can! Let’s go for small accomplished tasks wins in November and free space and time to enjoy your holiday season. Remember that being present is a present to yourself and loved ones.
Following are a few recommended 20-minute tasks you can easily nail to begin developing your organizing muscle for the new year:
1. Pull out your phone and review all Apps. Delete Apps no longer used or needed, as well as, outdated and duplicate Contacts. Tip: consider grouping remaining Apps by like colors or categories to find with ease.
2. Check your pantry and fridge for expired items. Again, this is not meant to be a thorough declutter, but to release stored items that are no longer good. Imagine seeing that container in your pantry or fridge and believing you aren’t in need of the item only to learn it has expired when you are ready to use. This small win allows you to have an accurate account of your essential food items for holiday meals. Tip: add to your groceries list on your phone Notes app.
3. Holiday Gift Wrapping Supplies: Are you able to readily find needed items? Gift wrap, gift bags, tissues paper, bows, tape, gift tags, markers/pens, etc. Declutter and donate wrapping paper and bags you don’t plan on using. Use a basket, bin or container to gather items in an accessible spot. Tip: consider purchasing quality metallic gift wrapping paper that is not holiday specific for use all-year long.
4. Live in cooler temps? Inventory your coats, hats, scarves and gloves. Tip: use an over-the-door clear shoe bag storage and place gloves, scarves and hats in pockets.
5. Holiday Capsule: Attending a holiday gathering? Hosting a gathering in your home? Planning to take family holiday photos? Organize and separate a few outfits (including accessories) for the season. Tip: Try them on before hand to make certain you still like and clothes still fit; add items to donation basket that doesn’t.
The goal is to declutter small spaces and categories for immediate results. Ultimately you are developing your organizing muscle to enter the new year renewed and ready to take on larger spaces. Small wins matter!
