Christmas Tree Decor

December 2024

christmas tree ornaments

December is here and if you have not yet tackled your tree, now is the time! If styling a tree is not something you enjoy, it’s OK, keep it SIMPLE. However, if you look forward to really putting on the ritz, then go for it!  No matter whether you are seeking a minimalist approach or desire all the bells and whistles, following are a few tips for decorating with ease:

1. Have a PLAN and a budget. This year, my goal was NO NEW DECOR; it’s easy to get caught up in the moment and make unnecessary purchases. Start with what you have and supplement only if needed.  Remember you have to store all those items for 11 months. I assessed my inventory and involved my family in deciding which colors we would use between both trees. We own bulbs in gold, silver, bronze, purple and red. My plan is always to select a metallic base and add a color or two! If one color suits your fancy, that’s alright too! We chose gold and silver and I added touches of leopard print for the PEACE tree and bronze, purple with a few touches of red for the BELIEVE tree.

2. Sort ornaments by color and then category within each color. Of course, discard or repair any broken ornaments. This is the perfect season to donate ornaments that are in great shape but no longer needed or desired. This may include ornaments in colors no longer used in your home. Remember as we evolve, our styles and needs change; your holiday decor should reflect your current style.

3. Decorate the tree: Start by fluffing the branches on the tree. If your artificial tree is older and showing some gaps, consider buying individual pine picks to fill the gaps versus buying an entire new tree. Plug in and check lights on the tree. Add string of lights if needed. Lastly add ornaments. My strategy is to focus on one color, one style at a time–this is why sorting is a very important step. I tend to start with larger pieces and then fill in gaps with smaller bulbs. Don’t have a coordinated tree skirt, layer a coordinated fabric over an existing skirt.

4. Ornaments and tree storage: Crucial! This will reel-in your desire to buy more when you don’t have the storage space! Repeat: only acquire and keep what you realistically have the room to store. Label bins/tubs for easy identification in future use. My Recommended approach for protecting your investment: when using large bins/tubs, still use smaller bins inside the large tub to separate by color/category versus storing all in one bin. Consider using the bulbs storage bags with dividers to protect and minimize breaking. Storing tree in tree bag simplifies fighting to return the tree to its original box, some bags include wheels for ease in moving. Of course, the best time to purchase these custom storage pieces is the day after Christmas at 50% off.

Ultimately, the goal is to have this be a stress-free holiday.  Whether you choose a pencil tree, an 8-foot tree or a tabletop, decorating your tree can be a joyful experience. If you are lacking inspiration or motivation, check Pinterest photos and YouTube videos. Organizing and storing your tree decor should be stress-less!
