August is here and summer temps are at an all time high! However, soon we will be preparing our homes and closets for the upcoming season. Here are a few ways to jumpstart the season:
Prep Your Home
A few updates now will help make the transition into the fall season effortless. Join the August Audit and Edit Challenge to complete over the next 5 weeks. Doing so will give you a sigh of relief by Labor Day!
- Week 1: Entryway–is it cluttered? Is there a designated place for shoes, backpacks, keys and mail.
- Week 2: Living Room–does the furniture placement yield to the best function? Is there clutter and excess? Start by removing unnecessary decor, books and magazines to create a breathable space.
- Week 3: Kitchen and Pantry–are their unused or seldomly used appliances occupying valuable real estate on your kitchen counters? Consider storing away. Do you have excess dishes not used in years–donate. Check and discard expired products in your pantry.
- Week 4: Linen Closet–How many sheet sets do you maintain for each bed–try narrowing to 2-3 sets per bed. Do you have unused special towels–use them, today is that special day! Check condition of sheets and towels–worn, stained or torn discard? If gently used donate linen and towels to an animal shelter near you.
- Week 5: Wardrobe–Audit Your Closet (see below). Schedule a donation pickup at your home following your planned declutter session, it becomes your accountability partner.
Living with intention and releasing items around your home that no longer supports your lifestyle is freeing–SIMPLIFY.
Audit Your Closet
That’s right audit first, then edit your closet. What’s in your closet that you have not yet taken for a spin this summer? Ask yourself why you haven’t yet worn that bargain top that you found at the end of last summer season sale? Impulse purchase or you haven’t had the right occasion to wear. It’s so important to assess what you have before adding more items to your wardrobe this fall. Here are other questions to ponder when auditing prior to editing your wardrobe:
- Is there a change in lifestyle or size? If so, set-aside for a specified time to revisit and release if not worn within designated time.
- Take inventory by category. Do I own 10 black dresses but reach for the same 5 even when I have an opportunity to wear others? Am I keeping the extra out of guilt or obligation?
- Does it feel comfortable and would I buy it again? Avoid holding on to the just-in-case items.
- Am I holding because there is an outfit gap? I don’t have the right complimentary pieces or accessories. If so, add the desired item to your shopping list and limit shopping for anything else.
- Are there boots that need repairs? Drop off at repair shop in August and beat the fall rush.
A closet audit sets the stage for a successful edit, helping you make confident decisions to create a closet that’s not only organized, but one that is aligned with your personal style.
It really comes down to evaluating whether your wardrobe supports the life you’re living today. When every piece fits, flatters, and serves a purpose, getting dressed becomes simpler, faster, and you show-up confidently.
A thoughtful August Reset is an intentional way to help you step into fall feeling prepared, confident, and ready for the new season. Organization isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces—it’s about creating room for what matters most.
